Busch Gardens Kumba Closing? Rumors Spark Panic for 1993 B&M Classic
Rumblings are spreading fast across social media, and this time they center on United Parks & Resorts—specifically Busch Gardens Tampa and its iconic roller coaster, Kumba.
The legendary B&M coaster, which opened in 1993, recently underwent a major refurbishment due to safety concerns. Crews welded, repaired, and repainted sections of the track and supports to get it running smoothly again. However, with the ride now over 33 years old in 2026, many fans worry it may be nearing the end of its operational life.
As of now, only two other B&M coasters have been removed or fully replaced due to age: Dragon Challenge (formerly Dueling Dragons) at Islands of Adventure was completely torn down, while The Incredible Hulk Coaster received extensive new supports and track.
Kumba holds a special place in roller coaster history as B&M’s third coaster overall and their first sit-down model. It features seven inversions, including the then-world-record tallest vertical loop, and remains a fan favorite for its intense ride experience.
We hope that if a permanent closure is indeed coming, Busch Gardens Tampa gives the coaster a proper send-off. This would allow fans time to plan a final ride. Current rumors suggest the park might follow the abrupt “Kingda Ka” playbook from Six Flags—closing it with zero fanfare. By comparison, when Scorpion and Stanley Falls closed, fans at least received some advance notice.
Right now, many coaster enthusiast groups are urging fans to visit Busch Gardens Tampa and ride Kumba as soon as possible—ideally before August, with some pointing to August 2 as a potential final day.
